Since the majority of us have been WFH since March 2020, I’m sure we’ve grown FAR more accustomed to wearing loungewear day-to-day!
Now things are slowly opening back up, we might not be able to get away with wearing our pyjamas the office… but what’s the next best alternative? I’d say there’s a very strong case for jumpsuits!
I’m obsessed with jumpsuits. Mainly because they’re so, so comfortable. But they’re also super flattering – especially if you have a figure like mine, where your arms and legs are on the slimmer side compared to the rest of you, but you hold your weight around the middle (which I believe is called an “apple’ shape… delightful!). Plus, jumpsuits are just SO easy to chuck on and go – a real outfit-in-one.
When I worked at a Magic Circle firm, there were a couple of female partners who would wear absolutely amaaaazing jumpsuits to work and pulled it off with real panache. I’m sure theirs were Hugo Boss or something, instead of Mango like the one I’m wearing here! But it’s a look I’ve always been keen to emulate.
If you’re a jumpsuit fan too, here’s my two penneth on how to wear a jumpsuit to work:
Go for a tailored rather than slouchy look
Now, this one’s not hard and fast – I’m sure lots of you could rock a jersey jumpsuit to the office, especially now most firms have adopted a ‘dress for your day’ policy. But I do think on the whole, it looks a bit more polished (and you’ll consequently feel more in ‘work mode’) if your jumpsuit is more tailored. Try looking for jumpsuits which have:
- A double breasted collar, or lapels – aka ‘tuxedo style’
- A wide leg – like the one I’m wearing here!
- A belt.
Go for block colours
Come summer time, the high street is usually flooded with florals and jazzy prints. On the whole, I think it might be a better idea to save big, bold prints for the weekend.
Again, not hard and fast. You’re all adults and you know what’s appropriate for your workplace! But my own preference is to stick to one block colour, to make the jumpsuit that bit smarter for the workplace.
Add a blazer
I always like to have a blazer or jacket to hand, whatever I wear to work, to be honest – it allows you to adopt a smart casual dress code for the majority of your day, and simply pop on your jacket if you have any important meetings.
This is especially a good tip for summer, when it’s hotter than the sun on public transport, but freezing in the office thanks to air con!
Watch the neckline
Again, you’re all adults, and you’ll make your own decisions on what’s appropriate in your workplace. I would just say: some dressier jumpsuits can have a plunging neckline, as they’re more going out-y; so it’s worth considering how much cleavage you want to be showing at work. That’s all I’m going to say on that! You do you!
